EPIC! Featherweight Grand Prix: Second Round

Steve Lawson: Ladies and Gentlemen! Welcome! To the second round of the EPIC! Featherweight Grand Prix! The last time we were here we had 16 of the Worlds best Featherweight fighters. Now we're back in the Osaka Dome in Osaka Japan with the number narrowed down to 8. Hello everybody my name is Steven Lawson here with Mike Calloway calling the second round of what's been a great tournament s far.

Mike Calloway: Yeah Steve, so far things went pretty much as expected with the exception of the first fight between Ana and Soled.

Steve Lawson: You guys may also notice that the third seat here next to us is empty, as Maria Cruz will not be with us tonight. She was called up recently with an offer to face Chris Whiteford at the IMMAF, and what should be a spectacular bout as well. But yes the Soled Garcia fight was seen by many as controversial.

Mike Calloway: Two fighters with two of the biggest hearts going at it for the 3rd time Steve it has no choice but to be spectacular, but as for the first FWGP match up, it ended with Ana winning a controversial decision where some felt Soled won, but here in Japan it does not follow the same rule setting, doesn't follow the 10 point must system so under these rules in Japan Ana Garcia DID win the fight. In America it may have been a different story though.

Steve Lawson: Here in Japan they follow the rule setting of the fighter who's trying hardest to win the fight towards the end. Looking back at that fight, do you feel the Judges here made the right call?

Ana Garcia has found an opening in the defense of Soled, landing a big hook. Soled is wobbling!

The crowd groans from that shot, Soled Tossuer falls to the mat! Ana Garcia starts to celebrate, then realizes that the fight is still on!

Mike Calloway: There's no doubt about Soled dominating the first round, and the first half of the second, but towards the end Ana Garcia was landing those shots and executing those takedowns and trying to finish the fight which is what the judges are looking for, so by these rules I can understand the choice of the judges awarding her the win, but no matter what I think or you think, Ana won the fight and advanced to the second round.

Steve Lawson: You're right, Ana Garcia set to face Sanae Kondo!

Single leg takedown by Kondo! Kondo has some excellent wrestling skills!

Sanae Kondo begin to pound Nilla Wafer .. and what an incredible flurry! He's just wailing away at Nilla Wafer! The referee is saying he's going to stop it if Nilla Wafer doesn't defend himself!

Mike Calloway: Kondo is a very slick ground fighter finising Heywood in the second round with takedowns and ground and pound before catching him in a standing guillotine, it should be an interesting fight as both fighters want to take this fight to the ground, Sanae more so.

Steve Lawson: And afterwards we will have Sasha Marquez facing off against Felippe Flores, and I'm sure they know each other's gameplans coming into this fight. Flores wants to stand and trade, Sasha wants this fight on the ground

Mike Calloway: No doubt, Flores has good power in his hands, but Mercer has good power in his hands as well and Marquez completely smothered him. If she can get this fight to the ground it's as good as over but if she can't...well, it's also as good as over, only for her instead. But I'm sure she'll find a way to get it to the ground somehow as she always does. The question is can she keep it there.

Steve Lawson: Then following that match up we'll have Fred Asahina taking on Sophie Wright!

Mike Calloway: I usually try not to say anything about the fights in favor of one specific fighter but I don't see how Wright could possibly win this fight. I think the best style to defeat Fred is someone who will immediately take him down and test his ground skills because on the feet he has tremendous striking power and has put many to sleep, Sophie included. Hopefully she has learned from the last fight and comes in with a different gameplan otherwise we may be giving Fred the Knockout of the Night tonight.

Steve Lawson: But in her match with Sergio her kicks looked alot better and her stand up seems to be improving alot since we first saw her in the SCF.

Brutal knees to Olodumare's face, followed by knees to the body from Sophie Wright! Olodumare can't take many more shots like that!

Mike Calloway: This is true I will give her credit as she surprised me by defeating Sergio in the first round, but Sergio landed shots, shots that if Fred would have landed them the fight would have been over. She should go back, watch those fights and work on countering, dodging, head movement and landing those effective kicks of hers, or possibly taking the fight to the ground instead, but standing and going toe to toe with your chin out isnt the best idea.

Steve Lawson: And finally, after much trash talking from both competitiors Peter DeScott and Victor Gillean return to face off!

Mike Calloway: The two had choice words for each other at the press conference earlier this week and man, both say that they want to go for the knockout and I know that alot of fighters like to say that they want to knock their opponents out, but when it comes from the mouths of these two guys? I believe it.

Steve Lawson: Also remember that the first round is 10 whole minutes Mike and alot can happen in 10 minutes.

Mike Calloway: Yeah I don't see this fight going to a decision at all and if you've seen either of these guys fight you'd know why.

Mike Calloway: "Vicious" Victor Gillean is such an explosive fighter, completely ran through Misty in the opening round in what had to have been the most brutal fight of the night. I think he should have gotten a Brutality of the Night bonus for that fight

Steve Lawson: but Peter DeScott is known for having pressure put on him and coming back to somehow defeat his opponent

Mike Calloway: Exactly, which is what makes this fight so great, we know Victor is going to be super aggressive, will DeScott be able to snatch a victory like he always does or will Gillean be too much for him?

Steve Lawson: And to those of you who think this card will only have 4 fights, think again, as the Semi Finals as well as the finals will take place tonight as well

Mike Calloway: Let's take a look at the bracket for tonight



Steve Lawson: As you can see only 8 remain, out of all of these fighters, who do you think has the hardest road Mike?

Mike Calloway: I'd have to say Sophie for sure. She has to fight Asahina, and should she get past him she'll have to face the winner of Gillean and DeScott not to mention the final fighter of the 4 that remains on the left side being Sasha, Filippe, Sanae and Ana. She'll have to face these guys all in one night no less should she advance, so in my eyes she definately has the roughest road.

Steve Lawson: In my eyes Mike they're all tough fighters so they all have tough roads no matter who they fight next, but to start off tonights journey on the road to the Featherweight Title, Ana Garcia! Steps back into the ring tonight to face Sanae Kondo!

Mike Calloway: Credit to both fighters for putting on an amazing back and forth performance tonight. And he may have made it to the Semi's, but how much more does Sanae have left? By the end of round 3 he was breathing very heavily, and he still has two more fights to go.

Mike Calloway: Wow, and I thought the last fight was close. I think this is the most we've ever seen Fred Asahina hurt, great performance put on by Sophie Wright, and Fred may be injured Steve. I hope it isn't the case, but one of those leg kicks she threw in the first round caused serious damage and ultimately took away from Asahina's overall performance. He's two fights away from the title, but his leg is badly hurt and those two fights are TONIGHT.
